How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I took one Nyqil 3 hrs. ago, hoping it would subdue my coughing. It didn t. So I took 1 tablespoon of Guaiatussin AC 100-10 Mg/5ml. That worked for 3 hours. I am again coughing. Is it OK to take one more tablespoon of Guaiatussin? Thank You. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Do you have dry cough only or it is associated with sputum? Both conditions have different causes and treatment.
Dry cough treatment- Dextromethorphan syrup 8 hourly.
Avoid cold things.
If sore throat is associated with cough do salt water gargling.
If there is no relief after 3-4 days of treatment then consult a pulmonologist.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
