How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I have a terrible cough. It started about 3 weeks ago. It seemed to lighten up and almost disappear. It now returned and sounds worse than before. I cough so hard until my head hurts. I have even thrown up from coughing. It seems to have gotten worse over the last 3 or 4 days.

Hello,

As per your query, you have symptoms of a chronic cough which seems to be due to upper respiratory tract infection leading to Bronchitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day. Avoid the use of sharp and spicy food substances. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. Start with a proper course of antibiotics (Azithromycin for 5 days) along with anti-inflammatory medications.

Your symptoms will resolve in 3 to 5 days if symptoms keep on persisting you should consult ENT specialist and take proper treatment. You should get x-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
