How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

My husband has been coughing for the last month or so and he get unconscious while coughing so hard. He is 43 years old. This happened twice two days ago. He saw a GP about two weeks ago and he was prescribed with Amoxicillin but he is not better. Please help!

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. As the symptom [coughing] is there for the last one month, and there is no relief with conventional line of treatment thus following should be your approach:

i. Ask for investigations like
. Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia
. X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia
. If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine]

PS. As cough is there for > 15 days, no response to antibiotic thus this is an indication for immediate X-ray.

ii. The choice of antibiotic will vary from doctor to doctor, and from locality to locality

iii. sudden unconsciousness after a bout of cough could be normal: cough syncope [which typically happens], but at least cardiac tests should be done to exclude any heart disease.
