How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I cannot digest food easily. I automatically have cough attacks as soon as I try to eat any solids. I am recovering from a cold, where I was sneezing and coughing for about two weeks, but now I cannot control my coughing and cannot digest food. I also completely lost my voice a few days ago, and am slowly getting it back.

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. As I'm unable to examine you directly, thus notable points which can be discussed are:

i. having cough attacks while trying to eat could be due to :
. dysphagia [difficulty in swallowing], mainly obstructive.
. tracheoesophageal fistula

PS. Consult an ENT physician to exclude causes like allergy, acid reflux and other causes of laryngitis like chronic sinusitis, bacterial/ fungal/ parasitic infection to complex causes like vocal cord strain/injury or growth, with suitable examination and investigation [barium swallow, indirect laryngoscopy, and oesophagoscopy] or refer to an Otolaryngologist, till then
take
i. Voice rest, soft diet, avoid spicy food.
ii. lukewarm saline mouthwash gargles.
iii. vitamin C tablets and zinc supplements [zinc lozenges]

2. As the symptom [coughing] is there for about 2 weeks, and there is no relief thus following should be your approach:

i. Ask for investigations like
. Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia
. X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia
. If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine]

PS. As cough is there for > 15 days, thus this is an indication for immediate X-ray.

ii. The choice of antibiotic will vary from doctor to doctor, and from locality to locality

PS. Consult an ENT specialist [for quick visual examination of the throat] and for any necessary investigation(s)
