Hello Welcome to Ask a Doctor Service I have reviewed your query, and here is my advice. If it is not the productive cough then there may not be any sputum, once the sputum comes in mouth then patient can spit it out or swallow it, bit it should be sputum there, underlying cause of forming mucus is matter of concern, certain agents are there that can be used to reduce the viscosity of sputum like pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, ammonium chloride, these can be tried, along with this, steam inhalation, with tincture drops can be tried. Hope I have answered your query, let me know for further assistance.
