How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

My husband has had a cough for over three months. He is usually very active and has few complaints. However, his skin gets pale at times, he tires more easily, gets short of breath on exertion, he has dark circles under his eyes and appears to be aging quickly. He is 63 and never goes to see a Dr. My adult children, friends and neighbors all keep asking what is wrong with him.
