How Can Chronic Cough Be Treated?

I am coughing and hacking up a lot of mucus. I had a sinus infection 5 weeks ago, took amoxicillin for 10 days. Cannot seem to stop the cough or spitting up. Spitting up quite frequently--balls of yellowish brown mucus--sometimes spit up looks white and like cotton in consistency. Do I need another round of antibiotics?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
Chronic cough needs detailed evaluation. I think it could be due to persistent sinus infection. I suggest you to consult a physician and get the following things done:-
(1)- Start a short course of antibiotics for five to seven days. Levofloxacin is preffered over amoxicillin.
(2)- You can try antihistamines like levocetrezine for symptomatic relief.
(3)- You can use nasal decongestants like xylometazoline for blocked nostrils.
(4)- Do frequent steam inhalation to open up sinuses.
(5)- Expectorant cough syrups can be used to clear up mucus and secretions.
If symptoms persist despite all these ,additional in vestigations like sputum examination and X-ray may be needed.
Wishing you good health.
Regards
Dr Shinas Hussain
