How Can Chronic Cough And Throat Irritation Be Treated?

I don t know what s wrong, I get s sudden tickle in my throat then I start to cough until I throw up clear mucus. I have been to an ENT, a Gastroenterologist and had scopes and barium swallow plus X-Ray and even a biopsy of my esophagus that all came back negative for anything like Acid Reflux disease.I have also been to a Pulmonologist who diagnosed me with asthma and an allergy doctor who did tests and now I have to take allergy shots weekly. Still I am coughing till I vomit lots and lots of clear, frothy phlegm. It happens at any time day or night, but more so at night. No one seems to be able to give me a real diagnosis.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mucus can originate from the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract.

The most common reasons for persistent coughing according to the current medical studies are-
(1) post nasal drip now called upper airway syndrome
(2) GERD
(3) asthma
(4) non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis.

Of this causes, post nasal drip/upper airway syndrome, is the most common.

Some persons are not aware of the drip itself.

Some persons may have a combination of causes.

You can try using a combination of a nasal steroid spray and oral antihistamine/decongestant combination. It can take 2 to 3 weeks of persistent use for any improvement to occur.

I hope this helps.
