How Can Chronic Bronchitis Be Treated?

I went to the emergency room and was diagnosed to have bronchitis but they didn t know if it was chronic or acute but they gave me some antibiotics but only 5 pills and then 5 pills of something else. Sorry I cant remember the names. My question is, how long does it take to get better. I m a little better but still sick and this is the third week now of being real real sick. Cant breath at times at all.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Treatment of chronic bronchitis is a multimodality approach. In acute exacerbation stage clinician prefer to give necessary antibiotics, bronchodilators, steroids, decongestants, and others.

Supportive measures for desired time period according to the clinical evaluation and supportive parameters of x-ray chest and laboratory, bronchoscopy, and CT thorax. Once acute phase is over, then person is kept on maintenance therapy of bronchodilators.

General guidelines for you to get faster recovery:
• Regular walking in fresh air to get enough oxygen, light exercises, and yoga are corner stone of the management.
• Avoid smoking or tobacco in any form.
• Avoid exposure to excess pollen containing atmosphere, if needed.
• Use face mask.
• Prefer semi-reclining position while sitting and resting.
• Avoid stress and anxiety.
• Have regular sound sleep of 7 to 8 hours.
• Balanced nutritious diet to combat all invading pathogens.

Discuss with your doctor for further need of antibiotics and bronchodilator molecules. Keep your BP, blood sugar, cholesterol, and oxygen saturation level under control. Time period for recovery varies according to person in vast manner.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
