How Can Chronic UTI Be Treated?

Hello, a friend of mine thinks she has a UTI infection that has spread to her kidneys but is scared to take the antibiotics given to her because she is breastfeeding. She did tell the doctor that she was breastfeeding though so I would have assumed the medicine was fine. My friend (Danielle) is sort of a worry wart and tends to research more about what side affects there are or what could go wrong, so she found a lot of sites saying that she cannot breastfeed (or if she does that there are possible serious side effects for the baby). She is more worried about her baby than the side effects for her although there were a lot of possible and very serious side effects that werent even mentioned to her though either. Do you have a recommendation for her? Or maybe on how she could approach her doctor with this respectfully and get it corrected? I truly appreciate you taking the time to read this and help out, thank you. -Jessica

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I reviewed your query and here is advise.
I recommend her to do an uroculture to see which bacteria is causing it and which is the right antibiotic for it.
There are several antibiotics that work great and are well tolerable while breastfeeding.
In our clinic we use monuril (fosfomocina) that is safe for breastfeeding 3gr for once .

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
