How Can Chills And Insomnia Caused By Taking Metoprolol Tartrate Be Treated?

I started taking metoprolol tartrate 4 days ago, which was prescribed by my cardiologist, who is not available by phone today. I think he prescribed it to slow my rapid heartbeat. Since last night after supper I experienced slight headache--rare for me- and chills and had trouble sleeping. Today I still have lessened appetite and feel need for heavy wool clothing to keep warm. I dread trying to sleep again tonight. Is there anything I can do to relieve my symptoms?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. Metoprolol is a beta blocker that affects the heart and circulation and because it is a prescription drug thus your Cardiologist must have taken due consideration in excluding certain disease states and conditions which can interact with the medicine and make condition worse.

2. lightheadedness, coldness in hands and feet, troubled sleeping [present] are documented side effects of the drug, which one may experience/ develop after the beginning of the treatment, so if experiencing them make sure not to stop the drug immediately since stopping suddenly can make your condition worse.

3. clinically significant side effects/long term issues may occur during the treatment with metoprolol and treating physicians should be aware of this phenomenon, and because of the ADR [ adverse drug reaction] is very variable thus you should talk with your attending physician as to how to proceed further.

PS. under no circumstances you should stop-change- alter the dosage without first consulting with your doctor.
