How Can Chest Pain After Recovering From Shingles Be Treated?

I (75 years old female, very good general health, no allergies) have had shingles for 3 1/2 weeks. Rash has not been a problem and is almost gone, but pain in right chest, back and side is severe and congestion is bad (clear mucous). I am taking Gabapentin now and for 7 more days (having completed a prior drug) and hydrocodone for pain as needed. Now I m worried that I am going to be one of those shingles patients that has the pain for months or years. Is there anything else I can do to stop this monster? Pain is debilitating. Peggy Brownrigg

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

Postherpetic neuralgia can take up to 3 months to subside for most people. Continue Gabapentin. You can also apply Capsaicin patch on the area of pain for relief.

Hope this answers your questions
