Hi, I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Answer: Please keep taking your medications but do not “over-dose” yourself with benzonatate so that you can cough up the mucus in your chest.

Also, please take plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and to prevent the mucus from becoming thick. You can have water, soup, tea etc.

Steam inhalation (with or without a humidifier) is also very effective in chest congestion as it loosens the mucus and make it easier to be cleared.

Hope this helps. And feel free to ask for any further clarification.
