How Can Cerebral Palsy Be Treated?

Hi. I have a son who is 28, 5 7 and about 115lbs. He has cerebral palsy and has had seizures since he was one and have been controlled by medication. He was on Depakote and Trileptal for many years. December 22 at about 3:00 am he called me in his room, because he felt like a seizure was coming on. He has been having what I will call focal seizures approximately 3 times a day since then. We have had him monitored in the hospital and they did an EEG and they didn t really find anything. They did say he had a few small seizures, but not when he said he did. We have taken him off the Depakote and put him on Keppra and he still had what he felt like was a seizure and then the doctor increased the Keppra to 1000mg once in the morning and one at night. He is still having 1 - 3 seizures a day. There is no shaking involved, but he has the weird feeling, which he can t really describe, for a long time. I d say they are lasting 50 to 60 minutes, but then has a less intense feeling for longer. We are at a loss what to do. Waiting to hear what the doctor wants to do next. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately there is no permanent cure for cerebral palsy. Only treatment is prophylactic medicines to reduce seizure onsets and frequency.

I would recommend consulting a Neurologist for planning a better seizure control regime.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pooja.Sanap
