How Can Burning Sensation And Pain During Urination Be Treated?

MY HUSBAND HAD AN IGUINAL HERNIA REPARED YESTERDAY AND COULDN T URINATE BEFORE BEING RELEASED TO GO HOME, SO THEY INSERTED A CATHETER TO DRAIN THE URINE - SUCCESSFULLY - BUT IT STILL BURNS AND IS VERY PAINFUL, IS THERE SOMETHING HE CAN TAKE TO RELIEVE THE BURNING? HE HAS BEEN DRINKING LOTS OF WATER AND HE URINATES A LOT - BUT STILL PAINFULL. CAN YOU SUGGEST SOMETHING?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think your husband is suffering a urinary tract infection maybe as a result of intervent. We use trimetoprim sulfometoxasole in our clinic for simple UTI. If he is taking other type of antibiotics given by doctors for preventing infection at operation site , don't take anything. He can take anti inflammatory drugs such ibuprofen to relieve pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
