How Can Bed Sores Be Treated?

My Husband has a bed sore that looks bad in my mind. I got the feeling the Nurses thought so too. He had a liver transplant and was in ICU for 2 weeks. Just got transferred to floor late yesterday. Today is the first time I saw the sore when they tried to roll him. He has been a difficult patient and not fully cooperating. But I need some guidance on what should be done to take care of this and help it heal. I know these are dangerously in risk of infection which is serious given his condition. Transplant was on Aug 10 thru early AM 11th

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Bed sore has to be managed systematically because it can act as focus of infection and even lead to transplant rejection. The infected portion along with the surrounding tissues have to be removed thoroughly. Do a pus culture and chose antibiotics accordingly. Daily wound dressing also needed. Use water bed and frequent change of position are required to prevent bed sores.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
