How Can Ascites Be Treated?

I have a friend who has Ascities liver and has had fluid removed in the last 6 weeks. His weight is up again. Can they remove more fluid, if so, how many times will this be able to be done? What is the long term prognosis? Is this disease manageable without a transplant? Thank you Tim

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Ascites is a medical term used for 'accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity'.
Causes which are commonly associated as cause for it include:
1. Cirrhosis
2. Heart failure
3. Hepatic venous occlusion
4. Kwashiorkor/protein malnutrition
Just removal of fluids is not the main stay of treatment, but only a part of treatment.
Treatment should aim at treatment of underlying cause.
If the underlying cause is cirrhosis of liver with liver failure, then liver transplant would be necessary.
Prognosis of such diseases is relatively bad.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Best wishes.
