How Can Anxiety And Insomnia While Suffering From Epilepsy Be Treated?

Hi Doctor, My Sister has a history of Epilepsy and she delivered a baby 3 weeks ago. On the day when she had her c-section (LCS) delivery she has a attack of seizures. This attack made her very depressive. She has been prescribed to take Lamitor OD-150mg in the day and Lamitor OD 100mg and Levipil 500mg in the night everyday. She is also taking lot of other post delivery medicines which are - antibiotics, iron, calcium , vitamin and lactation tablets. however she is not breastfeeding her baby and hence stopped the lactation medicines. She is now full of negative thoughts and always complains about anxiety, forgetfulness, sleeplessness and fast heart beat. She lost interest in food and everything else. She has very less emotion towards her newborn too. She is always worried and continuously worries about her health. She is worried about how long she will be like this low. Occasionally she took Restyl tablet for anxiety and her neuro doctor prescribed Lonazap which she has taken on few occasions when she wasn t able to sleep. Hi doctor I please request you me what is actual state of my Sister and what type of treatment she has to undergo to become a normal person. She had her first attack at the age of 8yrs. Since then she has been taking medicines however missed few years due to our family problems. For past 3-4 yrs she has been taking Lamitor OD as the standard medicine. Thanks, Mahalakshmi

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Based on your description of her present mood, she may have post partum depression.

It would be best that she sees a psychiatrist or psychologist to help treat this condition.

Treatment would help her to feel better and would also help with her interaction with the baby.
She should be assessed as soon as possible so that treatment can be started.

She may not be on the medication for a long period of time, just till she gets over this time in her life.

I hope this helps
