How Can An Itchy Rash On The Scalp Be Treated?

My scalp has an itchy rash. It is not dandruff or bugs. It has been happening for a while. Small bumps all over and I Change shampoos to test for allergy and irritants. I live in Hawaii and recently went to the mainland for two weeks. While there, my symptoms deminished. At home now and they have worsened. The bumps feel very much like a rash. Do I need to see a doctor or dermatologist? Please advise.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history you are having scalp folliculitis. My treatment advice is -

1. Avoid hair oil application for 1 month.
2. Apply an antifungal lotion like Clotrimazole lotion twice daily on affected part.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like Levocetrizine twice daily for itching.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral Fluconazole taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
