How Can An Injured Sternum Be Treated?

I think i have a bruised or broken sternum . It hurts to move. It hurts to bend over, sit up, turn side to side, everything. It’s not hard to breath though, but the pain is horrible and I can not sleep. I don’t know what has caused this either. It feel tight too.

Hello,

The sternum is a bone which fully develops only by the age of 45 to 55 years. So, there is no condition called broken sternum.

You have not mentioned your age. If you are elderly and if it is really broken sternum then it really becomes emergency and pain is intolerable to the core.

So, there is no question that you might have any problem with it rather than slight inflammation might have occurred.

If you want for your sake you can spend some money and can get the CT scan of chest done. But I think it is of no use.

Just take some anti-inflammatory medication like Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, etcetera for few days. If pain so intolerable, then you can take Tramadol, Diclofenac, Morphine, Pethidine, etcetera.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
