How Can An Altered Sense Of Smell Be Treated?

From last week , I have had the constant smell of gasoline/exhaust fumes (it's the only thing I can relate it to) in my nose. My problem started a month ago when I lost my sense of smell but now I have a constant smell of gasoline. It is very annoying, and this smell of gas/exhaust makes me nauseous. Please help

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of altered sense of smell which seems to be due to olfactory hallucination i.e disturbance in olfactory nerve sensations/distributions. It could be due to side effects of certain medicine, sinusitis , oral infection and nerve dysfunction.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to keep your head elevated while sleeping and maintain proper oral hygiene. Take diet rich in zinc supplements. Use nasal saline spray with nasal wash 3 puff each nostril thrice daily to keep nose clean. You should consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order certain test to find out the exact cause and treat it accordingly. Avoid pricking nose with any sharp object.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
