How Can Allergic Skin Reaction Caused By Poison Ivy Be Treated?

I have a bad reaction to poison ivy right now, the worst I have ever had. I have boyles, a number of grape size yellow bulges, some in clumps, one the size of a small macaroon. They seep, and reduce somewhat but have not gone away in three days or so now. How serious is this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I understand your concern

Yellow bulges means probably they are filled with pus.It signifies bacterial infection of the allergic skin lesions caused due to poison ivy.

You need to first clean the wound thoroughly and gently with anti bacterial soap and water.
Apply local antibacterial cream like fusiderm thrice for 3 days.
Local ice pack compresses for 15-30 minutes may help reduce swelling.
Oral antihistaminic like cetrizine once a day for 3 days.
Avoid touching the lesions with unclean hands.
Dont press or squeeze them.
If still the lesions persist beyond 3 days, oral antibiotics like cipro/cephalexin along with oral prednisolone may be required for 5-7 days.(prescription drug).
Also non responding skin lesion may need testing for fasting blood glucose levels to rule out diabetes mellitus.

Hope I answered your query.
Further query are welcome.
