How Can Agitation And Anxiety Caused By Brain Injury Be Treated?

I have a close friend that was in a serious auto accident ... brain buise is what they have told us. He has been sedated with propofol now on fentanyl . Seems extremely aggitated and much anxiety. when they lighten his meds to try to wake him up a little/ Does this sound correct. He is in ICU but was wondering if someone read to him or played soft music it would have a calming effect.

Critical Care Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Agitation and anxiety are the conditions which we will see in psychiatric patients or the patients who had head injury, or there is inflammation of meninges (layers covering the brain) of the brain, called as Meningeal Irritation.

The Patient needs to be under intensive care unit with medicine to have hemodynamic stability or if the patient is hemo-dynamically unstable and/or to control cerebral edema and VITALS monitoring.

Usually if the damages are not that much severe, patients recover in 48 to 72 hours. But, if the severity is more then it takes time for improvement of the patient.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah
