Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a painful abdominal hernia from alcoholism. The ascites fluid has gone since I quit drinking 4 months ago. I have liver disease but I ve been lucky that only a small portion of my liver is scarred. My liver is now functioning properly and all my other organs are in good health. Im now going to see someone at the hospital to see if they can operate at the end of this month when I ll be nearly 5 months dry. I m 37 years old, attend AA regularly and am in good health now. Do you think an operation could be a possibility for me? I hope so, thanks.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You can go for surgery, but it can be done once your ascites is settled. If we operate while you are having ascites, there is chances for complications like wound infection and even recurrence of hernia. You can go for an ultrasound and confirm that the ascites is subsided. Consult a general surgeon and he will direct you accordingly. You can go for either an open surgery or a laparoscopic surgery.
Wishing you good health.
Thanks.
