How Can A Swollen Lymph Node Below The Ear Be Treated?

Hi I have a 8 yr old who gets chronic sinus infections. It s been awhile since he s had one. But he recently got a cold and has been having nasal drainage and coughing. We noticed today just under his right ear is slightly swollen. His gland there. We don t like taking him in for antibiotics. So even with his gland swollen could he get over it himself or is that a sign it s time to take him in.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The gland(also called a lymph node) swells if there is infection or inflammation in the nearby area. In this case, maybe there is inflammation in the ear or in the right side of his scalp.
If your son does not have fever and the lymph node is not getting larger nor is it tender to touch, then it will be fine to just keep an eye on it.
For the cold, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain or temperature greater than 101 degrees and plenty of fluids to keep him well hydrated and mucus thin and easier to cough out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
