How Can A Skin Burn Be Treated?

A burn was caused to my son (21 yrs old) yesterday. boiling hot water, poured into a glass picture. The glass burst and hot water hit his stomach instantly blisted the skin and blisters are broken open. We had silvadine cream in our Rx cabinet at home. The area was washed with antibacterial soap & water, covered with gauze and silvadine cream. Shoud we be doing anything else 24 hours later?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

First thing I want to say is, do not break or pop the blisters. In this way, you will protect them from further damage. The gauze must be loose in order to allow the proper circulation of the skin. Cold compresses are helpful to reduce inflammation and pain as well.

The silvadine cream is OK, it contains the anti microbial agent called silver sulfadiazine. It prevents wound infection in burns. If the burning is not quite serious you do not need to use it a lot.

Till now I have to say that you did great do your son. Just pour water on the burned skin but do not touch it. Dry it and put a new gauze every day. You can apply the cream for 2-3 days till the blisters will vanish.

Cold compresses over the gauze help for the pain and fast recovery.

Hope this is helpful. Wish fast recovery.
