How Can A Restricted Movement, Swelling Caused By A Fracture Be Treated?
Dear Dr Siegel, I am a 53 yo female who sustained a sports injury 6 days ago. An X-ray has revealed A linear lucency articular surface medial femoral condyle on the axial projection suggesting an undisplaced fracture. a small to moderate volume effusion or haemarthrosis. possible internal derangement. An MRI to be considered is the comment. I have a full time teaching position involving high physical demands and lots of stairs. Can you please guide me through a process to recover. Currently I have restricted movement and slight swelling. Cannot fully flex or extend the leg. An MRI is booked. Thank you
This is just to let you know that any fracture involving the lower limbs needs atleast 8-10 weeks of immobilization (without any weight bearing on the limb) for it to heal properly.
So, your fracture needs a knee brace to be worn for the above mentioned period. Regular daily calcium supplementation is a must (considering your age) to hasten the fracture healing.
If the MRI scan of the knee joint detects any ligamentous injury, it has to be treated accordingly.
Hope this information is helpful. Good day
