How Can A Hammertoe Be Treated?

I had foot surgery 3 years ago-Arthroplasty on the right second toe, and it has never healed properly; the toe is almost worse than the original condition (hammertoe). The doctor said sometimes they do not heal properly and there is nothing he can do about it. I would like another opinion on that. Thanks Connie Blake

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After reviewing your health query, I'm of the following opinion:

i. As surgery was performed earlier and still symptoms persisted with deformity, thus post surgery it can occur because of wearing ill-fitting footwear or prolonged/ untreated or poorly managed arthritis, and because deformity [hammertoe] has already been there thus Orthopedic examination/second opinion is mandatory, till then;

- NSAIDs [pain killers], cold-pack application, insole orthotics, local cortisone injections can be used to delay progression and address any painful symptoms.
- Toe spacers can be worn between 1st and 2nd toes for providing a corrected mechanical field.
- use a pumice stone. The corn or callus that forms on top of the hammertoe can cause discomfort when you wear shoes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
