How Can A Boil In The Right Armpit Be Treated?

I am a nurse.....my 42 year old daughter has what appears to be a boil underneath her right arm in the armpit. Has been there 5 days now. It is red and she says still feels kind of hard but painful on palpating. Can you suggest what she can take orally or use topically to alleviate this ? She has several kinds of oral Antibiotics in the house such as Bactrim DS....clindamycin and Cipro. Would any of these help? Thank you!!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Boils are a kind of bacterial infection and can be easily cured with proper and timely treatment. Start a short course of antibiotics preferably Amoxicillin-Clavulanate combination. Apply topical antibiotics like Mupirocin. Cipro and Clindamycin are not much effective for boils. Keep good personal hygiene to prevent recurrent boils or abscesses. Make sure that her blood sugar level is well controlled as uncontrolled diabetes can cause recurrent boils.

Wishing your family good health.

Thanks.
