How Can Charcot Foot Be Treated?

My husband has Charcot foot in his ankle .... the doctor has put him in walking cast due to ulcer that will not heal. I feel they need air to heal. Is this not a factor? Nothing against the doctor, and very good wound doctor. But cannot get in his walking boot due to ulcers that will not heal. Also, pressure from his job he puts on his foot while in walking cast.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The main goal in this diagnosis is to stabilize the joints. This is why the doctor has put him in walking cast. Some other suggestions that I can give are:

- Immobilization is important
- Limit activities that cause the condition
- Use custom shoes.

If the ulcer does not heal after several weeks surgery may be needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
