How Badly Does Drug Abuse Affect Crohn S Disease?

Hi there About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with Crohn s disease and have been medicated with sulfasalazine to keep it under control. In the past 3 years I have also developed quite a serious methamphetamine drug abuse problem. And, I m sure not coincidentally, my crohns has steadily been getting worse. Much more pain, many more mouth and stomach ulcers, and blood in stool etc.. That I didn t have/were no where near as bad before. What I m asking basically is HOW BADLY will my drug abuse affect my crohns and do I need to discuss maybe a different kind of medication to keep in under control. Please respond asap! Thank you

Hi,

Methamphetamine is a major contributor to your worsening of Crohn's Disease. It is well-known to cause vasoconstriction. Reduced blood supply makes it difficult for ulcers to heal and causes pain. I guess your gastroenterologist is not aware of your meth abuse, or he would have warned you earlier. I would suggest that you get rid of this habit as soon as possible.

Best wishes.
