History Of Open Heart Surgery. How Long To Wait After TAVI Before Interferon Therapy Is Started?

Hello, I am now going to have a TAVI, at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, B.C.. I have had three open heart surgeries already in my life. I am 64 years old and my first surgery was when I was 26, then 37, and again age 52. It was in my second open heart surgery that I acquired tainted blood at Vancouver General. My problem is this. They want to treat my Hep C at this time, but are worried that my heart may not take the interferon procedure. My hemoglobin will go to low apparently. With my liver at stage 3, my heart surgeon tells me the options are limited to only a TAVI, but with a possibility of OH surgery in 5 years or so. My question is this, how long after my TAVI will I have to wait before I start with my interferon for Hep C? I should have asked this question when I was consulted.

Thanks for your time,

Max

Dear Max,

Thanks for your query. The safest thing to do would be for you to undergo TAVR, hopefully uncomplicated, and then undergo cardiac rehabilitation, which usually takes about 6 weeks; once you graduate from cardiac rehab then things should be stable enough from a heart perspective to consider treatment of Hep C.

Yours truly,

Dr Brenes-Salazar MD
