Have Wrist Pain And Swelling Of Fingers. Healing Time?

R wrist pain x3 wks s/p hitting wall. pn radiates into 4th/5th metacarpal and up ulna side of forearm . pn is constant 3/10 dull, achy. twisting motions such as brushing teeth , putting deodorant on, turning while driving writing and playing video games cause pn to go to 6+/10 sharp and achy. icing makes it worse. no noticeable abnormalities, slight swelling of fingers. first x ray was neg for obvious fx. ttp to top of wrist near ulna and sharp ttp to snuff box (pn was not there until about 3 days ago) dx was sprained wrist, jus wondering if i should get repeat xray or if like a sprained ankle it will jus take time to heal?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The swelling in the finger and wrist after an injury is likely to be due to a hematoma formation due to a soft tissue injury or a bone injury. If the swelling is persistent then do get an X-ray done to find out.
The following measures will help you in symptomatic relief:
1. Give enough rest to your wrist. You can use an elastic brace for comfort.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help.
4. Hot compresses to your wrist will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
