Have Multiple Bulging Veins On Hip, Family History Of Cirrhosis. Are They Varicose Veins Or Thrombophlebitis?

I have multiple bulging veins on my right hip some on my left hip and about 4 around my stomach below the belly button but above the waist . None of them hurt but looks concerning. Both parents had cirrhosis and I used to smoke a lot but have since quit after noticing them. They are all below the liver so I think it is more likely superficial thrombophlebitis or varicose veins . What do you think? I am 19 and hope lowering my BMI to a more healthy level will solve the problem.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

The description provided by you suggest that the veins can be varicose veins or just prominent veins. If the bulge disappears on pressing the veins then the veins do not have thrombophlebitis. As your parents had cirrhosis of liver it is advised that you get yourself examined and even get an ultrasound of the abdomen to know the condition of your liver.

It is good to know that you have given up smoking and are keen to be more healthy by reducing your BMI level. Wish you all the best for it.

I hope I have responded to your query to your satisfaction.

Regards,

RKK
