Have High BP. On Amlodipine. Did Not Resume The HCTZ. Now Feet Have Swollen. Will HCTZ Help?

High BP....was on Verapimil for 12 yrs. New Dr. and BP was not responding to Verapimil. I was given Lisinapril and HCTZ. Bad reaction to Lisinapril. Dr. took me off of both and then gave my 2.5 mg of Amlodipine and said after I was on this med and it worked (hopefully) and it seems to have, she increased the Amlodipine to 5 mg. but did not resume the HCTZ.
I am noticing that in the evening my feet are swelling...they hadn't before.....would taking the HCTZ help the swelling?? Long weekend and no dr. available....(No insurance right now either).

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Previously you were using verapimil and now stopped the drug.
Amlopidine 5 mg is taking ,but no relief as there is swelling over feet ( dependent parts).
The edema ( swelling over feet) is not a good sign particularly for an old anti hypertensive patient .
Edema may be due to congestive heart failure ,so please consult your treating doctor and get his advice regarding edema feet.
2nd reason may be any problem in urinary system so consider this thing also.
Hydrochlorothiazide will not only reduce swelling of feet but also decrease hyper tension.
You can use safely but after consultation with your physician as there are so many side effects of this drug.
Till avoid salt and salt containing food items.
Good luck.

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Amlodipine dilates the blood vessels and is the cause of swelling... nothing to worry
HCTZ treats the pressure / and also will reduce the swelling / It can supplant and/or supplement amlodipine
Discuss with your doctor...do not change drugs without his approval

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Aparna Amritsagar's  Response
Hello,

Its good to know that Amlodipine has help to bring down your blood pressure. HCTZ is a diuretic which is also helps to decrease the blood pressure as well as edema feet. You can consult your doctor regarding starting a combination medicines since you are developing edema feet. Also you need to check your urine for any proteinuria, since you are hypertensive since last 12 years.

Till that time you can reduce salt intake in your diet & also take one pillow below your ankle so as to reduce the edema of feet.

I hope i have answered your query.Have good health.
