Have Burning Stomach And Queasy Feeling After Taking Meloxicam. Anything Else?

Hello. My mother, age 70, is having GI discomfort after taking a muscle relaxer I have her for her foot pain. I had some meloxicam (MOBIC) 15mg that I had for my lower back pain. She told me that this morning she had real bad GI discomfort- a burning feeling inside her stomach and feeling queesy. She has increased her fluid intake in an attempt to flush the medication out of her system. Is there anything else that we could do? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

All oxicam group of drugs (piroxicam, meloxicam, lornaxicam etc) have a high propensity of irritating the gastric mucosa (especially in elderly people) leading to pain or discomfort in the epigastric region.

So, a prior intake of a Proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) or a H2 blockers (ranitidine or famotidine) will resolve the issue.

Always any painkiller medication is to be taken along with or immediately after food to lessen the chances of heart burn or gastritis.

To get instant relief from heart burn, any antacid liquid 10-15ml can be taken orally.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
