Have Anti GAD Bodies, Chronic Knee And Hip Issues, Mild Urinary Incontinence, Ruptured Disc, Autoimmune Issues. Sound Like?

I have long term joint and muscle problems, most likely autoimmune. I do have anti-GAD antibodies, teir contribution isn't real clear. I have had joint problems since I was aprox 5 yrs old (I just turned 50). I have had chronic L knee and hip problemps since I was 18-20. I became permanently disabled at the end of my FP residency in 1997. recently I had the flu, became dehydrated and had 2 severe falls in the middle of July. I found out that I have AVN in my left hip, knee, and ankle. I also have developed some mild urinary incontinence since then. I went to a spine ortho and found out today that I have a R acute ruptured dis. My hip replacement has been delayed. This is fine, but the ortho mentioned nothing about the incontinence, and I didn,t bring it up (my fault). I'm concerned it wasn't addressed. What do you think?

Hello, I had gone through your query and understand your concerns. Urinary incontinence is a common symptom in pathologies related to hip (or pelvic) bones as urinary bladder, that holds our urine, is a pelvic organ located near the hip bones.
However in your case, the urinary incontinence is most likely to be caused by the ruptured disc. Spinal cord provides nerve supply to urinary bladder and regulates micturition. Injuries to spinal cord is often related to loss of bladder control and thus results in urinary incontinence.
You should not ignore the urinary complications related to spinal or pelvic diseases as these may lead to UTIs or other severe complications.
Urinary incontinence is best treated by using indwelling Foley catheter or by clean intermittent catheterization (CIC).
However I would suggest you to consult your spine ortho or a urologist regarding the bladder incontinence.
Hope my answer has helped you to clarify your queries. I would appreciate if you post futher queries, if you have. I would be happy to help you. I hope you get well soon and wish you a healthy life ahead.
