Has Ulcers, Diagnosed Positive For Pylori Bacteria. Is This Hereditary ?

I am concerned that my daughter who is 22 has 3 ulcers and the biopsy came back as pylori bacteria. My son was 17 when he had to have emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer. Does this run in the family? My older brother died of esphofigal cancer and my younger brother has had pressure ulcers and osteomyelitis as he is in a wheelchair for over 17 years.

Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I a so sorry hear about all you have experienced and what your family has been through.

H. Pylori is not hereditary. It is transmitted when ingested orally with food. It causes gastritis and increases the risk of gastric cancer in the long run if not well treated. Fortunately, treatment with 3 antibiotics is often sufficient.
The only reason why it may be more common in the family than others can be related to you sharing much in common and may be the same practices that increase risk of contamination.

I hope you find this helpful and informative. I wish you well and a speedy recovery. Step up your personal hygiene especially hand washing, good food preparation and storage before consumption to avoid being contaminated in future. If there are more questions, please feel free to ask us and answers for sure will come your way.
