Has Migraines, High Heart Rate Numbness And Tingling Sensation In Arms And Legs. Was On Amitriptyline. Take Off Beta Blockers?

My son is 23 yoa. He has had migraines since he was 10 yoa that he would vomit and have visual auras. Then all of a sudden at 22 yoa, he started with numbness and tingling in arms and legs. Then one day he had loss of speech which he becomes aggitated with as well. His speech comes out with words he doesn't mean to say. He was put on Amitriptyline after trip to ER which worked for exactly one year. Then another episode of same symptoms but then new symptom of chest pains/pain in rib area. Trips to ER his heart rate was 120 put on beta blockers and then the migraine/speech episode occured,. Took off betablocker and now on Noritriptyline was fine for about 3 months and now pain and high heart rate. He has had numerous MRI/CT with angiography, nerve conduction etc. When he was in his teens, he had heat sensitivity and lower back pain as well.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.

First of all, I would like to reassure you that your son's symptoms are not suggestive of any thing serious, as MR angiogram and CT angiogram are within normal limits. This has excluded vasculitis or brain ischemia (lack of blood flow to brain) as cause for his symptoms.

He needs treatment with good anti-migraine medications such as topiramate or divalproex. For acute relief, he can use rizatriptan tablets.

I hope it helps. Please get back if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Neurology)
