Has Low Ferritin Count, Constipated, Loss Of Diet. Prescribed Iron Medication. What Is Going On?

My 2year & 10 month old son has a low ferritin count (14). What is the normal count for his age? He is a picky eater and struggles with constipation. What is the best way to boost his ferritin count? My doctor prescribed iron medicine, do I need to give him extra Vit C when giving him the iron medicine, and as my boy is struggling with constipation, will it not make the constipation worse when taking iron medicine.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

The normal ferritin level around this age is 7-140 micrograms / liter.

So the child ferritin level appears within normal levels.

But its level to be interpreted with taking account of his clinical profile as it is some times elevated in acute inflammations.

Low ferritin is suggestive of iron deficiency and other serum iron investigations also done to detect this problem.

Continue the medication as advised by your pediatrician. And you can add vitamin C with your doctor advise.

Iron may precipitate constipation but try to give more dietary fiber rich food as it will help to relieve constipation.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
