Had Tonsillectomy. Having Headaches, Neckaches, Recurring Infection. Need IV Therapy?

I had tonsillectomcty 6 weeks ago, suffering with serratia m, cultured 3 weeks after surgery, NP would not listen to my complaints, MD out of country, 10 day of levoqin, 5 day off antibiotic, infection back, culture heavy again of serratia m, have 4 days of second levoquin, ENT sending me to infection disease MD. Now am I contagious to others, out of work ( I am a RN on med/rehab unit), I have been going through a terrible time coughing, drainage, can't sleep @ night with these symptoms, headaches, neck aches (TMJ due to surgery, again NP did not listen to me, said I was having referral pain, now in physical therapy, 3x week). ENT suggested maybe something going on with my immune system because he feels I should be infection free. Do I need IV therapy?

You need to get a throat swab culture and antibiotic sensitivity test done so that the best and most effective antibiotic can be selected. You may need a longer than usual course of antibiotics due to persistence of the infection.Intravenous drugs will be required if oral drugs are found to be resistant to the bacteria.

General & Family Physician Dr. Ashish Jain's  Response
Dear User, I would suggest a pus- culture and sensitivity and change of antibiotic based on the result of the test.
Certain antibiotics are equally potent when given orally or by IV route. It all depends on the oral bioavailability of drug. Drugs with poor oral bioavailability are usually given through IV route to achieve proper concentration at the site of action. If burden of infection is heavy then IV route is preferred compared to oral route because 100% of drug administered is available at the site of action. Moreover some antibiotics are available only in IV form so they can't be given orally.
So it is not always true that Iv antibiotic cure infection better than oral ones. Susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotic is more important than route of administration. If a bacteria is resistance then infection can't be cured whether you give antibiotic orally or IV.
