Had Fracture At Ulna And Radius, Pins Were Placed But No Relief. Pins Was Bent And Bone Not Alligned

Hi, my name is Heather Andersen. I'm a physical therapist with a mom who sustained fractures distally at the R ulna and radius. 2 pins were placed. 1-2 weeks later, after absolutely no pain relief, one of the pins was found to be bent and the bones were not aligned correctly. They removed the pins, realigned, and placed metals plate(s) internally. Is this normal procedure? What's normal time to remain in a cast? Thank you so much for your time!!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The fractured bones are internally fixed with plates and screws to provide rigid immobilization, which inturn facilitates early bony union. So, its a normal procedure.

Generally, after internal fixation of fractures, no external support is needed. Having said that, an external cast may be needed in case of comminuted fracture fixations and severely osteoporotic bones. This cast will be generally removed after 6-8 weeks of primary fixation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
