Had A Head Injury With A Small Bump Should Be Consulted?

My 11 month old fell and hit the back of her head on the sharp corner of the molding around the floor. It bled for a second and seems to have a marble-size bump. She has taken a nap since then but seems a little fussy now. Should I have taken her in to see a doctor?

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. You should consult doctor as she is fussy. The doctor will evaluate her for any symptoms of significant head injury. The signs or symptoms, based on which CT head is needed, are

- Vomiting - Single episode of vomiting must be taken seriously.

- Sponatnaeous ENT bleed - Bleed from nose, ear, mouth without any direct injury requires CT head to evaluate fracture of skull base

- Fits - It signifies brain injury

- Focal deficit like weakness, vision loss, mute.

- Persistent headache (persistent crying with no relief)

- Loss of consciousness or dull response of baby

If any of above is positive in your child, CT head is must. CT head will rule out any fracture or bleed. Depending upon CT head finding, further plan will be decided.

If no positive sign and she is active, accepting feed, making eye contact and playing, it means no need to worry. The baby will recover on medication.

For pain relief and bump, you can follow few tips
- Apply icepacks at injury site
- Keep head end elevated
- Avoid pressure at injury site
- You can give her syrup Ibuprofen after proper prescription.

Hope it will help. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
