Given Bone Marrow Test Sample, Result Showed Blast Cells Insufficient, Flowcytometry Cannot Be Performed. Suggestion?

I will be very thankful to you if you could answer my question. i gave my bone marrow sample for test. my doctor asked me to do so. the laboratory people called me and said that blasts are insufficient in my bone marrow so a test named flowcytometry cannot be performed. can you please tell me what does it mean and due to deficiency of blast cells it can be deduced that cancer may exist in my body?

Hello, Welcome to HCM, I am Dr. Das

Look, insufficient blasts in bone marrow sample indicates two possibilities-
1. faulty technique which leads to aspiration of scanty sample.
2. disease condition which leads to low blasts in bone marrow. it may occur in some chronic leukemia where fibrosis has already occurred. in case of myelofibrosis or hairy cell leukemia, this type of problem may occur.

So, now, you have to do a repeat aspiration. If this also lead to scanty blasts, bone marrow biopsy should be considered. It is the only way to have the proper picture.

Hope this becomes helpful.

Regards.
