Experiencing Periodic Lightheadedness Or Vertigo, Headaches And Pressure Sensation With Nausea. Prescribed Valium. What Can Be Done?

In the past year I have been experiencing periodic lightheadedness and slight head pressures. I wouldn't call them headaches.Three weeks ago I had 3 instances of nearly blacking out. They happened in a 3 hour period, twice when lifting my head off the pillow and once while sitting on the toilet. The whole room was spinning for a few seconds. I also felt very nauseous and had the sweats. I went to the Hospital Emergency room and was diagnosed with Benign positional vertigo. I was given anti nausea medicine. I also had a slew of tests ( ekg, cat scan etc. All my vitals were normal. Upon leaving, the P.A. gave me a prescription for Valium and Antivert. I did not fill the Valium prescription. I heard that was pretty heavy duty stuff. After those 3 episodes of nearly blacking out, I have not had any recurrances. I still ,however, have issues with lightheadedness and some nausea. I took the Antivert for a day or so and when no events occured, I stopped taking it. Yesterday, I decided to resume the Antivert again to see if it would help with the lightheadedness and nausea. The Antivert really makes me tired and sluggish. I guess my main question is whether or not the lightheadedness and the Vertigo are related. I haven't felt like passing out but I still don't feel right. Should I consider going to the Hospital's Vertigo Clinic ? I hear there is a procedure called the Epply maneuver. Would you be so kind as to comment on my situation ? Thank you

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
Based on the symptoms you have described, you seem to have vertigo, most likely a benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). In addition, you have also suffered from syncope and now you have features of pre-syncope.

BPPV responds well to medical treatment and Epley's manoeuvre. For this, you may visit a vertigo clinic.

For the evaluation of syncope (fainting) and pre-syncope (lightheadedness), you may undergo HUTT (head up tilt test) under the guidance of a cardiac electrophysiologist.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
