Ear Pain After Water Got Into The Ear. Have Ear Infection With Bleeding. Need Antibiotics?

Hi, thank you for taking my question. I am very concerned about my Thai friend who was squirted with water in Bangkok's recent Songkhran festival. He got water in his ear. He has now a very bad infection which began as an earache. There was blood involved. He has been to the hospital twice and is still in much pain. His mother is now taking him yet another hospital. It appears that the water was infected...maybe it came from a canal or river water? What do you think has happened here and which antibiotics should he take?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello & thanks for your Q - it seems like he has ear infection thr contaminated water
Usually bug called Pseudomonas causes ear inf thr' contaminated water
It will need checking by sending of swabs for microbiology test but in any case he will need to be on oral antibiotics like ciprofloxacin - but I must stress that ear canal needs checking as well by a Dr to make sure if there is no damage to ear drum
Untreated ear infection can spread further & may prove dangerous

Hope he gets well soon
Thanks

General & Family Physician Dr. J Kingson John David's  Response
Hi
Thanks for using Health Care Magic Forum,

As your friend is infected with contaminated water and noticed blood, there is chance of infection to persist if untreated at earlies
Keep the Ear Dry (Do not use cotton swab much as infection can spread thru inner structures)
Look for any foreign particle left insitu and if there is discharge from that ear,
Instill Ciplox ear drop 6th hourly in affected ear .
Tab ibuprofen twice a day
Tab levoflox orally twice a day for 5 days

I Hope I Provided Useful Information. Do ask Furthur Questions to help You get well soon.
