Does Urinary Tract Infection Cause Elevated PSA Levels?

a year ago I had either an urinary tract infection and/or prostatitis. part of my exam was a psa test, which scored a 7.1 (my previous normals were no more than a 4.0). I began taking Cipro and within a day my symptoms seemed to vanish. I completed the full 28-day regimen of Cipro, but failed to get a second psa test.A year later the same symptoms returned, and again I am on Cipro. they sampled my blood for another psa test today. this time I will return for the followup psa test. does an urinary tract infection and/or prostatitis routinely cause an elevated psa ? thanks, John

Hello John and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your anxiety.
Prostatitis or UTI don't routinely cause elevated PSA.
But,prostatitis is a known cause for high PSA,which is false positive.
With treatment of the prostatitis,the high PSA levels return to normal.
If the levels are elevated after course of antibiotics,it's safest to do a biopsy.
