Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Taking Miralax And Dulcolax Cause Loose Motions?
My daughter has been taking 2.5 capfuls of miralax and also 5mg of dulcolax for the past 3 days (orders from her doctor after an xray showed chronic constipation)Yesterday she seemed to have quite a few watery bowel movements (maybe 8-10), but today it seems as if she is having difficulty pooping again. Her stools are now small and loose, and we're still using the medication. However her stomach still feels bloated and she has said that her tummy hurts and she has to poop. Do I need to call the pediatrician again or should I give her more time to have a bowel movement?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns> Since your child is under Pediatrician's supervision we can say it is safe to continue the medications. But since the bloating and pain in abdomen are still present it is imperative to visit your Pediatrician for clinical evaluation and X-ray of abdomen to see whether the fecoliths are still present or not. If the fecolith are present then the better option is to give saline-soap enema for proper evaluation as Miralax and dulcolax cause loose stools by irritation and pulling in water from intestines which can be very troublesome in a small child. Stop Miralax and Dulcolax till further orders. Give plenty of oral fluids and electrolyte solutions.
