Does Taking Losartan And Metoprolol Together Cause Dizziness?

My Mom is 90 years old and was recently changed from Diovan to losartan for blood pressure. She is also taking Metoprolol. She has never had any problem with Metoprolol, but since starting Losartan, she has been off balance and very dizzy at times. Would this have anything to do with these 2 medications taken together?

I'm sorry to hear your mom has been having trouble since switching to losartan from Diovan. Both metoprolol and losartan can cause dizziness and off balance, especially if the blood pressure is getting too low.

However, Metoprolol and Losartan are often used together without any problems, and since Diovan and losartan are the same types of medication, I'm surprised that losartan would cause her problems when Diovan didn't.

That being said, every patient can respond to medications differently, and if your mom's symptoms started after switching, and there's no other apparent cause, it may be just that.

Do you know the reason the doctor switched from Diovan to losartan?

Hi,

Losartan causes dizziness in up to 3-10% of the patients especially after the first dose and when the patient is dehydrated.

I, therefore, suggest my patient take Losartan at bedtime to avoid dizziness and avoid dehydration to decrease the chances of dizziness and hypotension.
