Does Swollen Tonsils In A Child Cause Extreme Dry Mouth?

My son gets extreme dry mouth while playing high school basketball. To the point he has trouble breathing. He had mono in August and his throat hasn't been the same since. It is very swollen. We went to an ENT and he put him on steroids and an antibiotic. When rechecked he said that he wouldn't remove his tonsils till he had infections five times in a year. Is the dry mouth associated with his swollen tonsils? How do we relieve his dry mouth while playing?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that your son breathes through mouth and it is the most probable cause that seems to me causing dry mouth..
Due to continuous air exposure inside mouth that also increases while playing seems to e causing dry throat and throat irritation that keeps recurring..
I would suggest you that you should consult an Oral Physician and get him evaluated and he can get a mouth guard fabricated that will help in relieving dry mouth and also enforce nasal breathing..
Sipping water and chewing chewing gum while playing can further be relieving to his throat..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
